Fleet Training
Published statistics indicate 1 in 3 company vehicles will be involved in a road traffic accident within the next 12 months, sadly it is estimated that everyday 4 people die and 250 employees are injured in work related driving incidents. Through research and the use of case studies these figures have been confirmed and largely accepted within the industry.

The publication, "Driving at Work" from the Health and Safety Executive and the Department of Transport clearly sets out guidelines of the duty companies have of managing the risks when an employee is driving on work related business. These requirements are in addition to the duties currently an employer has under the road traffic law.

It is advisable that each company should have in place a procedure of risk management to deal with occupational road risk to ensure it is dealt with in a similar way to that of mainstream Health and Safety. Consultation between middle management, directors and drivers can help to implement a strategy where everyone is aware of their role with regard to managing road risk. Each individual should be aware of the company’s Road Risk policy and their own responsibilities to implement this correctly and safely. A system should also be in place to ensure vehicles are regularly checked for defects and serviced in accordance to a manufacture’s guidelines.

Once a strategy has been installed it is important to monitor the progress to ensure that the policy is effective and if any changes need to be made. Employees should be able to report any defects to vehicles or incidents without the fear of disciplinary action being taken.

ALG Driving is able to offer a complete road risk assessment to company car and van drivers at any location nationwide. An individual assessment can be carried out to determine the level of risk an employee currently poses and how to positively act on the situation. It may well be that the employee is a capable driver but due to the amount of mileage driven, they may pose a higher risk than first imagined.

Fleet driver training can benefit any company that employees people who use company vehicles. The training can aid companies by helping to reduce the number of accidents and cutting costs such as wear-and-tear on the vehicles and fuel consumption. A positive image could be demonstrated to employees by showing concern for their safety and also to the wider community who may benefit from the safer driving from company employees undertaking work related driving.
